Observations from Alaska - Kindness Never Goes Out of Style

Alaska is breathtaking and beautiful. Even if you have not yet visited, there are several Alaska based TV shows highlighting the beautiful mountains and glaciers. Visiting Alaska has always been on my bucket list. A few years ago, I suggested it to my family and my kids balked at the idea. “What is there to do in Alaska?” After visiting, I’ll admit this is a trip best suited for adults. My family tends to be active on vacations. This would have been a little slow for them, though I’m sure they would have appreciated the beauty.

 I mentioned in a previous post the clientele on my cruise skewed older than I expected. With age comes all that you would expect; wheelchairs, walkers, canes, slower gait, etc. As an able-bodied person, it would be easy to get frustrated with the pace. It took longer to get off and onto buses, for example. My husband became the catcher of stumbling people, fetcher of left behind canes, and overhead bin loader. The sad part was the people he helped saw the help as an anomaly, when really, my husband was showing respect for our elders. If we are blessed to live to a ripe old age, we will all need help. It’s best to give it while we can. Kindness never goes out of style.

 When I reflect on this trip, I feel admiration for people with a myriad of ailments and various ages living and experiencing life to the fullest. Sometimes, the least little nothing can make me decide not to go somewhere. However, the senior citizens on this trip just kept it moving. Some of them may have needed a little extra help, but they were determined to live their best life. My intent should be the same.
